I am officially tapering for the 100 mile run. I am both nervous and excited, but mostly excited to celebrate life and to recognize Malia's battle with cancer. Please email me at amytriano12@gmail.com if you would like my cell phone number. I will have my phone with me while I am running so if you want to meet me at some point I can give you a location update. Or if you just want to give me a hard time, I would welcome that distraction.
Happy New Year to everyone! Keep Malia and other cancer fighters in your thoughts, and if you have some extra change don't hestitate to toss it their way!
Malia Juscyzk is a little hero battling stage IV neuroblastoma. On January 12, 2013 I will run a nine mile loop eleven times (two loops will be 9.5 miles), totaling 100 miles, to raise money for Malia. Please view Malia's site at http://www.maliacrushescancer.com/ to donate to her cause.

Happy Holidays
I recently received the holiday card from Malia and her family. It held excellent news, reiterating that Malia is in remission and is currently 6 months into a clinical trial run by Dr.Scholler that uses DFMO. DFMO's intended use was for treatment of excessive hair growth and African Sleeping Sickness, but is believed to help prevent relapse in neuroblastoma.
Malia and her family have set a goal to raise $10,000 for this research trial which has the potential to save the lives of many children with cancer. Below please find the information on how to donate to this specific goal. Thank you for all of the continued support.
I found a great blog which has a post written about Malia and her story. If you have a minute you can check it out here: http://joeandruzzifoundation.blogspot.com/2012/07/a-brave-little-girl-hopes-for-remission.html#!/2012/07/a-brave-little-girl-hopes-for-remission.html .

Las Vegas Rock N' Roll Marathon
I spent my Sunday night running with 40,000 of my closest running compadres. I was reminded once again of how commercialized marathon running has become. But all in all I had an unforgetable evening and was even able to beat my best marathon time by 8 minutes. Though after I finished I my first thought was " Wow I would have to run that about three more times to reach 100 miles. "
This was my last registered race before the 100 mile run. I had never seen Vegas before, well now I have, no need to go back. This weekend I am going to try for a 20 miler Saturday and a 20 miler Sunday am and 9 miles Sunday pm. Next weekens I will add another 9 miler Saturday afternoon. Then I will have one more true long run weekend before I start to taper for the run.
I have been thinking about what I should have around in terms of fluids and food while I am running. I have been using what little running experience I have to compose a detailed list of possibilities. In the coming weeks I will begin to get everything together. In January, it will have been two years since I ran my first marathon and about two and a half years since I started running. I am excited to continue pushing my limits (luck?) with the 100 miler.
Please donate to Malia and continue to support pediatric cancer and the true heroes who fight the good fight everyday. Malia surely continues to live every moment to the fullest, follow her story on facebook, twitter, and her website www.maliacrushesancer.com !

Ultracentric Race Report
I had lofty goals going into this race, however the race gods were not on my side. It was known going into the 12 hour run that I would have to leave after 9 hours. When I registered for the race there was a 6pm finish time listed on the website, however after booking I noticed the end time had been changed to 9pm. With a 10pm flight at massive DFW I was planning to leave early unless I was having the race of my life.
This however, was definitely not that race.
The course was a 2 mile out and back on pavement in a beautiful park outside of Dallas. Going into the run, the monotony of repeating an out and back was daunting, but I was hoping it would teach me some mental fortitude for the 100 mile. It wasn't as boring as I predicted, however if I ever do a timed race again I will have to choose one with a loop of at least 8 miles to prevent extreme boredom.
So for the interesting part: the race. Mistake #1: right before starting I ate a strange granola bar that looking back, I should not have experimented with in a race. I had major GI issues for the during the race and just felt all around awful. A lot of times when I am going for a run, my stomach or something will feel off for maybe an hour and it goes away. However, during this race if it was not one thing it was another.Different areas of my GI system continued to plague me the entire race. I got dehydrated pretty fast and tried to push fluids and do what I thought I should be doing, instead of listening to how my body was respoding to fluid and calorie intake. Lesson learned.
As I was finishing my last loop, I got a bloody nose, probably because of the cooler temps that I am not acclimated to at the present. This solidified for me that I would leave early in time to make my flight and not miss it on purpose for the race of my life (that I was definitely not having).
But despite the negative undertone of this post, which is sheerly due to my disappointment in failing to meet my personal goal, I got a lot out of this race. I learned to expect the unexpected, and will definitely prepare myself with a variety of different food and drink to eat during the 100 mile run. Because ultimately, some things don't work all the time. I also got an excellent long run in to help me prep for the 100. I feel great today, I am not overly sore. I was able to push through 38 miles despite not feeling too hot from the beginnig of the race. I have a chance to redeem myself next week when I run the Las Vegas Rock N' Roll marathon as well.
I am still an incredibly inexperienced ultrarunner. Most of the people at these races have been running these distances for years. I know that I still have a lot to learn. But I do know one thing, the beauty of running for me, are the days when everything falls into place and feels right. The days that I can run forever. So I'll embrace the not so great days knowing that the good ones happen when we least expect it. I am hoping that a good day comes on January 12th,but if it doesn't that is okay too. So good day or bad, I will run 100 miles in less than two months :)

Pre-Race Report: Ultracentric 12 hour Run Grapevine,TX
On Thursday I will be heading to Dallas for the Ultracentric 12 hour run so that I can get a decent long run in before the 100 mile run for Malia in January. This race was sort of spur of the moment, as another 50 fell through in early October. My goal is to get 54 miles minimum during the run, however my departing flight is at 10pm Saturday and the race ends at 9pm.When I booked my flight the website said the race ended at 6pm so I thought I would have plenty of time. I anticiate havingto leave after 11.5 hours or so which is fine with me I suppose. This morning I went for a really quick 3mile run to get some turnover on the legs. I will do 6 miles tomorrow and another 3 miles Thursday and have Friday completely off to rest up for Saturday.
I have created an event on facebook for my 100 mile run so everyone should check that out! Also, I noticed on Malia's website that a bunch of people completed an Ironman for her which is amazing, congratulations to all who participated in the race. In the coming weeks I will begin to advertise the run more extensively throughout San Diego to try and get some more people involved. For now, I hope the race goes as smoothly as possible. I hope to remember to not drop my electrolyte pills halfway through the race like I did during the American River 50 which lead to excessive water retention and fingers the size of sausages during the last 10 miles of the race.
I'll have a race report after the race this weekend. Looking forward to running the Rock'N'Roll Marathon in Vegas in three weeks as well! I have been trying to incorporate more races into the training to decrease the monotony of running miles by myself around San Diego, which I will be doing plenty of come January.
Have a great rest of the week everyone! Thanks for reading and supporting Malia!

Update!
I apologize for the lack of posting recently! I have been traveling a lot, but definitely think about the 100 mile run daily. I am so excited to push myself and raise awareness about Malia's fight and childhood cancer. Originally, I had signed up to run the Dick Collins 50 tomorrow morning, I wish I were running but some unforseen circumstances have prevented my travel up to San Francisco for tomorrow's race. But don't fret, there are many ultras and I am signing up for the Ultracentric 12 hour run in Dallas on November 18th. This essentially is a two mile loop course and I will run as far as I can in 12 hours. My goal is 54 miles, but we'll see what my body does when I get there. Running is an incredibly humbling experience at times so hopefully I can meet my goal. Now that I have published my goal mileage I have to do it!
I am also going to run the Rock N' Roll Marathon in Vegas which is at night the first weekend in December. With these two races as training for the 100, hopefully I will feel prepared come January.
It has finally cooled down in San Diego and feels a bit like fall, almost anyway. Tonight I plan to log 6-7 miles. Then on SAturday i am just going to start my watch and run as much as I can for 4 hours. On Sunday I will increase the time to 5 hours and then Monday I probably will simply rest and stretch! That about sums up my weekend in terms of running.
Keeep on runnin' folks! And let me know if you want to run some with me January 12th!

Ronan
During the Stand^2Cancer fundraiser Taylor Swift performed a song dedicated to a little boy who battled Neuroblastoma. All of the proceeds from this track go to cancer research so I highly recommend buying it on iTunes!
This morning when I didn't necessarily feel much like getting out of bed to run, I got ready anyway and powered through 8 miles. Just thinking of all of the kids fighting everyday, surrounded by their families and loved ones really makes you think of what is important and what in life is actually difficult. If running 100 miles is tough than Malia and many children who went through similar struggles have run the equivalent of 100,000 miles.
I run to celebrate health. To raise awareness about the heroes the world only knew for a fleeting moment and those who fight on, inspiring others to live life to the fullest. I want to leave the world a little better than the way I found it. Malia has already accomplished this at the ripe old age of 4.
Donate to her cause and let's all raise awareness about Neuroblastoma!

139 Days
I noticed on the countdown that there are 139 days until the start of the 100 mile run for Malia. I have a 50 mile race quickly approaching on October 13th that should be a good indication of how much more work I have to do to work up to 100 miles.
I am still looking for other runners to come out and support Malia! Also, it would be nice to have a few pacers lined up for the last 40 miles or so. Let me know if you are interested. Check out Malia's website and see what neat events are happening to support her fight against Neuroblastoma.
Go Malia!

Saturday Long Run
This week has been unseasonably warm in San Diego. It hasn't really been a factor during my early morning runs this week. This morning however, the sun came up quickly and didn't let up during my long run which made it a bit more difficult. I once was adapted to the humid Florida heat, but after more than three years on the west coast I am no longer acclimated to warmer runs.
I managed to slog through, drinking 2 Liters of water. Despite the heat, I cannot deny that it is beautiful outside today. The way the sun shone on the ocean made the water appear deep blue. There were so many people at the beach and boats were everywhere on the water. Everyone was just trying to enjoy the beautiful day.
So while not ideal for a four hour run, I am thankful that I have the opportunity to spend the day in the sun!

TGIF!
Happy Friday everyone! Not much has been new in terms of training. I am planning a 30 mile run tomorrow morning and will be sure to take pictures. Every time I have run the course it has been overcast and none of the photos have come out well so I am still working on photos of the running route.
Keep Malia in your thoughts and message me if you want to keep me company in January. Malia's website has some neat raffles and other fundraisers going on as well so check that out.
Sending a cancer crushing hello to everyone. Have a wonderful weekend!

Six Months To Go!
Tomorrow will be six months until the run for Malia. I hope everyone is as excited as I am! Training has been going well, Malia is great motivation.
Please continue to check out her website http://www.maliacrushescancer.com/ , there are a lot of cool events and raffles going on to support her and and her family.
There is not much to update at this point. On the schedule for the rest of the week: 10 miles tomorrow am, 7 miles am and 7 miles pm Friday, 10 miles am and 10 miles pm Saturday, 14 miles on Sunday.
My running schedule until August will probably mirror this with three or four 26+ mile runs thrown in.
Coming from someone who dreaded the mile run thru high school, I can't believe I think this is fun now...must be something in the water.
I will take pictures of the course on Saturday morning. My awesome parents sent me a camera!

Happy Birthday Malia!
I wanted to wish Malia a very Happy 4th Birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day.
My 100 mile race training has been going well. I am continuing to train nearly everyday. The nice part of the training is that it is very simple. All that I have to do is get up and run.
Some landmarks of interest on my running route for the 100 mile run are: La Jolla Cove, Windansea Beach, Mitt Romney's home, and the house from The Real World San Diego (2011). So if you weren't feeling like running before--the scenery will be enough to distract you from your pain.
Again I wanted to wish Malia a HAPPY FOURTH BIRTHDAY!!!
Thank you for reading. Let's all get some running in for Malia!

Week One of 100 Mile Training
Tomorrow morning the journey to 100 miles will officially begin. On the schedule is an 8 mile run and some p90x if anyone wants to join! I am excited to begin training again after a week off. This week is not too demanding in terms of mileage. I will be totaling only 40 miles by the end of the week. My training will progess to 80+ mileage weeks as I get closer to January.
New developments in terms of run logistics: I will run with a balloon each loop and tie the balloon to a post at the end of Chelsea Avenue where I turn around to head back to La Jolla Village. On the last loop I will bring all of the balloons the final four miles and release them as I finish the 100th mile (sorry environmentalists!). I am also going to record videos periodically throughout the run to keep things interesting.
As the weeks wear on I need to keep the big picture in mind and work my hardest. The bigger picture being helping Malia crush cancer and raising awareness about her battle. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy Monday. Keep Malia and her family and your thoughts! http://www.maliacrushescancer.com/

Vermont City Marathon
I just returned from Vermont after visiting family and running the Vermont City Marathon yesterday. I proudly wore the pink shirt with Malia's name and website during the race. I will post pictures as soon as they are up on the marathon website.
The course was beautiful. We traveled around downtown Burlington and along Lake Champlain. The weather was perfect, albeit warm, as I am used to the arid California temperatures. My legs were a little heavy I think from the traveling and red eye-flight, but I had a great time with my family.
This week I plan on recovering from the race, resting up for June 5th, which will be when my official 100 mile training regimen begins!
I haven't taken Malia's yellow wristband off since I received it. Malia and her family are my inspiration!
Please visit Malia's website at http://www.maliacrushescancer.com/ and let's all get training to crush some miles for Malia January 12th!

Facts About Neuroblastoma
Check out some interesting facts about Neuroblastoma at http://www.nballiance.org/facts/
<> The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) federal budget was $4.6 billion. Of that, breast cancer received 12%, prostate cancer received 7%, and all 12 major groups of pediatric cancers combined received less than 3%
<> 80% of children have metastasized cancer at the time of their diagnosis. At diagnosis, only 20% of adults with cancer show evidence that the disease has spread or metastasized.
Don't forget to donate to Malia and her family at http://www.maliacrushescancer.com/! Every dollar makes a difference.
Please comment if you want to crush some miles for Malia. I know January seems far off at the moment, but there is no better day than today to lace up those running shoes.
Keep Malia and her family in your thoughts. I'll keep you up to date on my training in the logmyrun box on in the upper right hand corner of the blog. Below you will find my sidekick Hershey who is cheering Malia on as she crushes cancer!

Help Malia Crush Cancer
On January 12th, 2013 I will be running 100 miles to raise money for a young girl Malia, battling Stage IV Neuroblastoma. The cost of medical treatment for this disease is oftentimes not covered by insurance and can exceed $100,000.
I will be running eleven nine mile loops (two loops will be extended 9.5 mile loops) from my house in La Jolla, through La Jolla Cove, down to Bird Rock and back. It would be wonderful to have anyone join me for as long as they would like to run. The route is shown below highlighted in red on the map. There is plenty of time for everyone to run if you begin training soon!
Please visit Malia’s website at http://www.maliacrushescancer.com to donate. Also please email maliacrushescancer@gmail.com if you are interested in helping purchase flights for Malia and her family to come to California and crush some miles!
I will use this blog to keep everyone updated on my training as well as progress made in terms of fundraising. Keep Malia and her family in your thoughts.
